With all the amazing technology currently popping up in the beauty industry, it’s hard stay tuned in to what’s new. Heck, the lingo even confuses us from time to time. Below, we break down the latest talk of the town. KATE HELFRICH AND SARA BACHIS, SEPHORA COLLECTION PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT THE BUZZWORD:  Serum foundation. THE BREAKDOWN:  Compared to creams or liquids, serum foundations contain fewer thickening agents, which means that they are lightweight and have a higher concentration of active ingredients and pigments. Because of this, you use less serum foundation for your desired coverage than you would with a liquid formula. THE BEST BETS: SEPHORA COLLECTION Teint Infusion Ethereal Natural Finish Foundation A moisturizing foundation with a barely-there finish. Dior Diorskin Nude Air Serum SPF 20 With its sheer finish, this designer foundation screams luxury the second you touch it. CONTOURING MAGIC: HOW TO CONTOUR ON DEEPER SKIN Backstage secrets: revealed. The process of contouring on deeper skin tones is nearly identical to contouring on lighter skin tones. The only difference is the type of product used; the formulas are higher in color payoff, and you tend to use more highlighter than contour. In this tutorial, we show you what products to use for a cheekbone-defining look. BECKY PEDERSON STEP ONE Prep your face with a moisturizing and a lightweight foundation. Then, once you know your face shape, place your highlighter. Choose a highlighter that’s rich in pigment and offers full coverage—this will read best on your skin. STEP TWO Place your contour product. When choosing a shade, avoid taupe and beige undertones. You want something that offers warmth and richness, like what you’d find in a bronzer. STEP THREE Use your brush to blend in a patting motion. It’s easier to first blend the highlighter into the skin before you blend the contour i...

CONTOURING MAGIC: HOW TO CONTOUR YOUR ROUND-SHAPED FACE Transform your cheekbones in a few simple swipes. Round-shaped faces generally have an equal length and width. Contour products are used to illuminate the center of the face while slimming it on the sides. In this tutorial, we show you how to use contour products that create angular definition. BECKY PEDERSON STEP ONE Highlight the high points of your face. For a round-shaped face, draw an X in the center of your forehead and bring the line down the nose. Create another X on your chin and follow with two V’s under your eyes. STEP TWO Contour with a warm, taupe shade to offset your highlighter. Draw a curved line from the center of your ear to your jawline. Follow with C shapes on your temples. Then shade the sides of your nose. STEP THREE First blend your highlighter with a small brush using rolling motions so the product stays in place. Then use a bigger brush to blend your contour. Blend your cheek contour dow...

CONTOURING MAGIC: HOW TO CONTOUR YOUR OVAL-SHAPED FACE Conjure light and shadows in the blink of an eye. Oval-shaped faces are generally one-and-a-half times longer than they are wide. Contouring is used to create a more balanced ratio. In this tutorial, we show you how to use contour products that minimize your forehead while emphasizing the center of your face. BECKY PEDERSON STEP ONE Highlight the high points of your face. For an oval-shaped face, first apply highlighter in a half-circle shape on your forehead. Then, sweep it under the eyes, down the nose, outside the nostrils, on the chin, on the outside corners of your mouth, and on the outside of your jaw. STEP TWO Choose a contour color that’s not warm or shimmery. Use the angled side of your brush to apply your contour into the hollows of your cheeks. Then contour under the jaw, on the outside of the forehead, and down the sides of the nose. STEP THREE Blend. Start at the inner corner of your eyes and work yo...
